Fall class on flash literature at the Flash Fiction Institute
Cheryl Pappas
I hope you have all heard the fabulous news that Grant Faulkner, Meg Pokrass, and Tavia Stewart have established the Flash Fiction Institute—a place for workshops, community, and support for flash fiction writers. I’m so excited to be among the first round of instructors teaching flash fiction. Rather than a writing workshop, this is a course focused on reading and analyzing flash. I’m thrilled to teach so many incredible work! Here is the full description from the site:
There’s such joy to be had in the deep study of flash literature. In this class, we will analyze and appreciate flash fiction by Franz Kafka, Jamaica Kincaid, Pamela Painter, Lydia Davis, and many more. Each session, we will read as writers and take apart each story to see what makes it work, looking at various elements such as hook, exposition, plot, voice, and structure. We’ll also explore how each flash plays with absence and depends on the reader to help create the story. Writers will annotate assigned stories before class meetings, in preparation for our rich, fruitful discussions.
The class will be held every Sunday, 6 to 7:30, from October 19 to November 24. The fee is $349.
